About Us

Greater Calcutta Gas supply Corporation Limited (A Govt. of West Bengal Enterprise) is the first city gas company of India incorporated under the Companies Act 1956, having its registered office at 14, Canal West Road, Kolkata 700009. It is the only state owned organization that dealt with eco- friendly coal gas which was supplied to thousands of domestic consumers as well as commercial and industrial units in Kolkata and adjoining districts through underground pipeline. Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation Limited was getting coal gas from Dankuni Coal Complex, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, since 1990. Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation Limited, in spite of various constraints, was carrying the legacy of supplying coal gas by Oriental Gas Company Ltd. from the days dating back to the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857 and thus can truly claim to the heritage institution and pride of West Bengal.

For distribution of gas, Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation Limited possessed a gas grid comprising about 110 km long High Pressure Electro Resistance Welding (ERW) pipeline and about 400 km long Low Pressure CI/ MDPE pipelines spread across Kolkata and its adjoining districts. After the collapse of Majherhat Bridge, gas supply was suspended in Southern zone of Kolkata. Due to vulnerable condition of Talla Bridge, authority decided to remove pipelines along the decks of Talla Bridge resulting in suspension of entire supply of gas to Kolkata. Total supply of coal gas suspended from DCC in the year 2019 due to vulnerable condition of the main trunk pipelines under the deck of Vivekananda Bridge as decided by the State Govt. to avoid any loss of lives & property.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) in the year 2016 has authorized Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation Limited to develop, expand and operate a CGD network in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation region, and adjoining districts of Nadia, North & South 24-Parganas, Hooghly and Howrah. For the development of CGD network in Kolkata Geographical Area, Govt. of West Bengal has taken a decision in the year 2017 to execute the Kolkata CGD network project through joint venture between GAIL (India) Limited and Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation Limited. Accordingly, Bengal Gas Company Limited (BGCL), joint venture of GAIL (India) Limited and Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation Limited (GCGSCL) has been formed in the year 2018 (24.07.2018) to develop City Gas Distribution (CGD) Network in Kolkata city and parts of adjoining districts of North & South 24-Praganas, Howrah, Hooghly and Nadia to cater gas supply to customers in the domestic, transport, and commercial sectors. Kolkata CGD project is a part of prestigious URJA Ganga Pipeline Project.

Approximately 8000 DPNG connections are ready and likely to be commissioned soon. Out of 12Nos. of Gas Stations, 10 Nos. are already in operation and 2 nos. are ready to commission.  Apart from the above those 12 CNG Stations, 25 more Gas Stations are under construction.
